I noticed the new Nvidia Geforce 9600gt is out and from what i've seen it looks like as good a card as the 8800gt. It costs about $180, not bad for the first in the 9000 series.

I visited Nvidia's forums to check to see if they fixed the drivers for the 8800 and to see if stuttering was a problem with 9600. After skimming thru over 40+ pages about the stutter issue with UT2004 I've come to the conclusion that Nvidia has a complete lack of concern for fixing the driver for the 8800gt and the 9600gt. I am now considering the DIAMOND Viper Radeon HD 3870 512MB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814103050

Any thoughts?, comments?, or suggestions?

9600GT is not nearly as good as an 8800GT .. especially at higher resolutions with AA and AF activated.

I have an 8800GT and I dont get any stuttering with 04 at all. Have you tried turning your vertical sync on?

And when you installed the card did you clean out all the old traces of drivers with driver cleaner pro while in safe mode?

I seen in x-fire you asked if i was running a dual core.. yes I am running a dual core cpu.. Intel e4300 to be exact.

I am not getting any stuttering with the game.. Are you running an AMD or Intel dual core?

If you have an amd make sure you have the amd and ms dual core hot fixes installed...

Also try running the game on one core if you are on an amd...

The setting that made the stuttering go away for me was the threaded optimization setting in the nvidia control panel. Turn it off .

And what drivers are you using with you're 8800GT?

I am running the 8500gt. It is a crappy card, i regret buying it. I have browsed thru the endless pages on Nvdia's forums about driver issues that they just aren't fixing or even commenting about on the 8000 series cards.

Since i'm pissed at Nvidia I bought a Diamond Viper - ATI Radeon HD 3870 PCIE 512MB GDDR4 Video Card from Newegg for $169. It got great reviews and I read the ratings and it is neck & neck performance wise with the 8800gt/9600gt and is a little cheaper.

hmm never had any problems with my 8800GT with drivers or performance.
But the 3870 is a nice card to either way its better than the 8500 you had.. believe it or not but an old 6600GT will perform better than the 8500 lol.

Not every one seems to have the problem, but a fair amount do. If I remember right Hook and Atvar experienced it too on their 8800's. I'm not sure if they ever got them working right.

The 8500 was a bandaid to be able to play UT2004 when I first set up my comp, because I couldn't afford the 8800 at the time, back then it was still around $500

The stuttering only happens with WindowsXP. My 8800GT stutters horribly in UT2004, but only in DM, not in TAM or Freon. Tea made the smart choice buying ATI....I don't know if Nvidia will ever fix this bug.

Oh...it looks like Nvidia has fixed the bug. Better late than never I suppose.

I'm waiting for the official release. Those beta drivers are too complicated for my tiny brain. Seriously...I'll cry if it doesn't fix the stutter. UT3 is crap.

UT3 isn't crap, there just aren't enough of you guys playing to make it fun. All UT's are better played with friends Smilie

When I was using an 8500gt Groove{hlk} told me to set UseHardwareTL=False and UseTrilinear=False in the ut2004.ini and it helped with the stuttering in UT2004 Thumb .
